Welcome! My name is Portia Banda Firnhaber, and I am a South African born and raised black woman who has had many adverse experiences and worked to overcome them. I come from a transracial adopted family and have had the opportunity to pursue extended education and a career in the US. I obtained my Bachelor in Social Work in 2017 and a Master of Science in Homeland Security and Emergency Management in 2020. My career path has been systemic and community-based while working at Child Welfare Services, a local Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and Non-Profit Organizations. My goal has always been to help people and communities and I later discovered that trauma informed, violence prevention, response and mitigation have become a passion of mine.  

This blog is a platform to discuss my personal experiences working in the Social Work profession, addressing public and professional concerns while also educating people about the system and the importance of the work social workers do. I want individuals ro feel empowered in their learning and unlearning and also obtaining information that can ensure safety for communities and individuals.
